Science was regarded as a revelation — in fact, the only true revelation — Of reality. It was thought to be through science alone that access is provided to the world as it is in itself, not colored or  distorted by human Wants or preferences. Art corresponded to production, science to contemplation, and the productive was branded as inferior, an activity proper only to mechanics and Slaves.
